  • 1984
    • UW Congress considers legislation to make heroin available for cancer pain.  Wisconsin Controlled Substances Board opposes the legislation and commits to an initiative to improve cancer pain management in the state.
  • 1984-1985
    • Series of meetings sponsored by the Wisconsin Controlled Substances Board resulted in formation of the Wisconsin Initiative for Improving Cancer Pain Management
  • 1986
    • Renamed the Wisconsin Cancer Pain Initiative (WCPI)
    • Strategic Planning Session at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine: implementation committees formed WCPI named a Demonstration Project of the World Health Organization (December)
    • Freedom from Cancer Pain Day (December)
    • Two initial progress reports on the development of the WCPI published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (JPSM)
  • 1987
    • First issue of WCPI bimonthly newsletter Cancer Pain Update
    • Publication of WCPI patient education booklet Cancer Pain Can be Relieved
    • Governor declares December to be Cancer Pain Relief Month
    • Wisconsin Senate presents citation for the Controlled Substances Board for leadership in reducing needless suffering in person with cancer.
    • Articles about cancer pain and the WCPI  published in World Health
    • Progress report about the WCPI published in the JPSM
    • Release by WCPI Cancer Pain Can be Conquered, an 11-minute slide-tape video for patients

    • WCPI conducts workshop at the Second International Congress on Cancer Pain in Rye, NY
    • WCPI hosts the first national meeting for state cancer pain initiatives
    • WCPI works with the Medical Board to modify the amphetamine rule
    • Article describing the effectiveness of Wisconsin’s approach to achieving balanced drug policy published in Advances in Pain Research and Therapy
    • Article about WCPI programs in public, patient and professional education and regulatory policy published in the American Journal of Hospice Care
  • 1990
    • WPI participates in the NCI Workshop on Cancer Pain
    • Article describing accomplishments of the WCPI published in Advances in Pain Research and Therapy
    • WCPI publishes Competency Guidelines for Cancer Pain Management in Nursing Education and Practice

    • WCPI hosts role model conferences in Wisconsin and 30 other states

    • WCPI hosts/participates in numerous educational conferences for physicians/nurses/pharmacies
  • 1992
    • Governor declares February to be Cancer Pain Relief Month
    • WCPI receives grant from rRW to establish a Resource Center for State Cancer Pain Initiatives
    • 5th Anniversary Meeting in Appleton

    • WCPI represents on AC5 advisory Group on Cancer Pain Relief
  • 1993
    • Don and Marilyn Anderson begin support of the WCPI
    • Article about state cancer pain initiatives published in JPSM
  • 1994
    • 7th Anniversary Meeting in Appleton
  • 1995
    • 8th Anniversary Meeting in LaCrosse
    • WCPI collaborated with the Outreach Education Department of UW Hospital and Clinics and the UWCCC to develop and produce two public education videos
  • 1996
    • WCPI receives grant from MAYDAY to develop the Wisconsin Manual: Building an Institutionalizing Commitment to Pain Management
    • WCPI publishes public education brochure: 8 facts Everyone Should Know about Cancer Pain
    • WCPI Website established
  • 1997
    • Cancer Pain Update publishes changes in Wisconsin Controlled Substances Act, culminating a ten years’ effort to achieve more balanced state drug laws and that recognize the role of opiods in pain management.
    • At the request of the WCPI, the Pharmacy Board changes regulations to allow partial dispensing, faxing of prescriptions, extension of time in which a pharmacy must revise a written prescription for an emergency oral prescription.
    • UW Med School/WCPI receive grant from RWJ to incorporate pain assessment ad management into the JCAHO Standards
  • 1998-1999
    • Transition Committee reflects on future role of the WCPI
  • 1998
    • With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the WCPI implements Institutionalizing Effective Pain Management Programs with one quarter of Wisconsin’s home health agencies.
    • WCPI produces seven educational videos for home health nurses
    • CNBC’s Healthy Solutions contracts with the WCPI and the AACPI to produce Pain Management and Relief Article about state pain initiatives published in Cancer Prevention International
  • 2000
    • WCPI publishes the 2nd edition of the Wisconsin Manual
    • WCPI renamed the Wisconsin Pain Initiative(WPI) to reflect expansion of its mission to include all pain
  • 2001
    • Governor declares June to be Cancer Pain relief Month
  • 2002
    • WPI e-newsletter inaugurated
  • 2003
    • WPI and PSW co-sponsor 5 regional meetings on the role of opiods in the management o chronic pain
    • WPI supports survey of Wisconsin Insurance providers
  • 2005
    • WPI obtains funding from Medtronic to translate pain assessment tools into Hmong dialects
  • 2006
    • WPI completes and publishes study on third party reimbursement policies in WI
    • WPI celebrates 20th anniversary
